About

York Shotokan Karate Club, established in 1961, holds the distinction of being York’s first karate club and has built a strong reputation within the martial arts community. Since 1985, it has been under the leadership of Keith Gullen, a former National, European, and World Champion. Under his guidance, members have achieved significant successes, including becoming World Champions.

Despite its achievements, the club remains welcoming and friendly, encouraging beginners to join. It promotes a sense of community among its members, regularly organising social events to strengthen bonds.

The club's direct link to senior Japanese instructors ensures it maintains the highest standards and contributes to the development of karate at the highest level. This connection highlights its unique position as both the oldest and one of the most reputable karate clubs in York.
