Yass Hash House Harriers & Harriettes is a lively sports club located in the Yass Valley Council area of Australia. As a 'laid back' mixed pop-up hash, the club holds runs on any Friday of a month or whenever the need arises. For just $3, participants can enjoy a run, delicious food, great company, and drinks available from the bucket at very reasonable prices.
Joining Yass Hash House Harriers is simple. Interested individuals can come along to any of the runs on the night, as listed on the Yass HHH calendar. However, for those who would like an introduction or a lift, contacting any of the committee members is encouraged. The cost of joining is minimal, with a nominal charge of $3 for each run collected on the night.
Plus, the first run for new members is completely free.
Typically, the runs take place from a pub, club, or restaurant, with many pack members often staying for a meal afterwards. Occasionally, outdoor gatherings at the Hare's home or a park where the Hare provides food are organised. If the runs are not held on licenced premises, the Bucket offers an excellent selection of drinks at cheap prices.
Hash House Harriers, often abbreviated as HHH or H3, is an international group of non-competitive running and social clubs. The name “Hash House” comes from the mildly derogatory nickname given to the Selangor Club Chambers for its unimaginative and monotonous food. Yass Hash House Harriers (YH3) was founded by Suzie 'Dominatrix' Reeks, whose mother Hash was WACTH3. The inaugural run took place on Ford St in Yass with 20 eager 'virgins'.
This location has since become the 'Sacred Site' for all General Meetings (Annual General Piss Up - AGPU) and will continue to be until circumstances change.
The idea for a Hash in Yass came about during the Tassie Nash Hash (2011) while enjoying local cider with Caz 'Toesucker' Vincent, the former GM of WACT. Suzie, who had recently moved from Canberra to Yass, found that there were plenty of wineries in the area but no kennel to run with. After running out of cider during their discussion, the plan to start a Friday Hash in Yass was given the green light. YH3 initially ran on every 3rd and 5th Friday of the month but now operates on an ad hoc/popup hash basis due to the pack's laid-back nature.
The runs typically start at 6:30 pm, allowing for the relaxed Canberra hounds to arrive. There is usually at least one drink stop along the way. After the run, hash nosh (food) is available to help soak up the “nectar of the gods”. Each Hasher is required to pay a token cost of AUD$3, which includes the nosh.
The club operates under a democratic structure, with the GM being elected for a one-year term at every General Meeting. They, in turn, select a committee consisting of a Religious Advisor, Trail Master, Hash Cash, Hash Haberdash, Hash Pyro, and Hash Bucket. The AGPU, held every two years, allows for the election of new officials at the Yass Hash sacred site.
In conclusion, Yass Hash House Harriers & Harriettes is a fun and inclusive sports club that welcomes participants of all levels. With their laid-back approach and emphasis on camaraderie, this club offers a unique running experience along with great company and affordable refreshments.
