Welcome to Yad Moss, one of Northern England's premiere ski and snowboard areas nestled in the beautiful North Pennines National Landscape, just 11 kilometres south of Alston. Yad Moss offers over 4 kilometres of varied intermediate skiing and plenty of 'characterful' off-piste when conditions are good.
Yad Moss is not just a ski resort, but also a Community Amateur Sports Club run by unpaid volunteers. It is open to all skiers, snowboarders, and telemarkers, and also offers Associate Memberships to non-skiers or those who are currently unable to ski or board at Yad Moss. Every penny earned is invested back into improving the facilities for recreational snowsports. In fact, over the past 40 years, the resort has been able to provide accessible lift-served skiing in this part of the high Pennines.
Being located in England, the snow at Yad Moss can be unpredictable, and the amount of skiing available varies each year. The resort has to react quickly to favourable weather conditions and cannot guarantee skiable snow more than a day or two in advance. However, in good seasons, visitors can expect over 40 days of skiing with superb conditions. The ski season at Yad Moss can start as early as November and extend as late as mid-April, depending on the snow pattern.
Unlike traditional alpine pistes, the ski runs at Yad Moss are quite different. Due to erratic snowfall and rough moorland terrain, skiers will find themselves skiing on drifted snow between fences and following shallow gullies where the grass has been cut shorter. This unique setting allows for skiing on very thin snow cover, making snowsports possible even with minimal snowfall. Despite the unconventional surface, the resort has a modern piste grooming machine to maximise skiing opportunities.
Yad Moss offers ski runs graded as blue, including some short steeper pitches. The uneven surface and thin snow cover make the skiing challenging, ensuring an exciting experience for visitors.
The skiing area at Yad Moss extends from the ticket office at 600 metres above sea level to the top pylon at 720 metres. A single fast ski tow connects the ski area, which can be reached after a 10-minute uphill walk from the roadside car park. The auto-stacking Poma, which is 600 metres long and climbs 125 metres in vertical height, allows up to 600 skiers and snowboarders per hour with a ride time of about 3 minutes. This ski tow provides access to runs up to 800 metres in length.
Visitors who are not competent in using a fast drag lift are advised against buying a day or season membership. Safety is of utmost importance, and operators reserve the right to withhold the use of the tow if a guest presents a hazard to themselves or others.
Yad Moss does not offer ski or snowboard hire, nor does it provide lessons. Guests are expected to bring their own equipment and be competent in using it safely. Suitable clothing is also essential to keep warm and dry during the visit, as the sun does not always shine at Yad Moss.
For the convenience of visitors, Yad Moss has a club room located near the bottom of the tow. Situated above the piste basher garage, the club room is available to all season and day ticket members when the slope is open. It offers shelter, heating, and access to composting toilets. Guests are required to bring their own drinks and packed lunches, and are kindly asked to take their litter home with them.
Operating times at Yad Moss typically run from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on ski days. However, the precise opening and closing times will be at the discretion of the operators.
For a unique and challenging skiing experience in a stunning natural setting, Yad Moss Ski Tow is the perfect destination. Join us for unforgettable ski adventures in the North Pennines National Landscape.
