Worthing Indoor Bowls Club is a renowned sports club located in Worthing, New Zealand. Established in 1933, it was one of the first indoor bowls venues in the area. The club started with two rinks on the ground floor and a third shorter rink upstairs, along with a bar, tea rooms, a secretary's office, and two full-size snooker tables. The building was given a charming Downland appearance, with artistically painted walls and green-painted radiators blending in with the surroundings.
Over the years, Worthing Indoor Bowls Club has produced several international players, including Arthur Knowling, G. H. (John) Scadgell, and Gordon Sparks. These players have represented the club in various tournaments and championships, bringing honour and recognition to the club.
Notably, Knowling and Allen Spooner, the club's secretary, were national pairs champions in 1967, and Spooner was also the very first national indoors singles champion in 1961.
In December 1962, the club relocated to its current premises at Field Place, Durrington, due to a compulsory purchase order against its previous location. The new purpose-built building features five rinks, with the first carpet being hand-stitched jute. The addition of a glass roof and side windows allows for daytime play by natural light. The club takes pride in its history and has a picture gallery displaying newspaper photographs and reports on both the old and new buildings, showcasing its journey and accomplishments.
Worthing Indoor Bowls Club is dedicated to providing an inclusive environment and welcomes less abled members and visitors. The club has made efforts to ensure accessibility, with sloped entry at the front, level access to the rear of the building, and designated disabled parking spaces at both ends. Additionally, there is a designated space near the sloped access to the restaurant for electric scooters. Inside the club, there is level access to all areas, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy the facilities.
At Worthing Indoor Bowls Club, members can take part in various competitions and leagues, receive coaching from experienced professionals, and enjoy social events and functions. The club also offers catering services, ensuring that visitors are well-fed and satisfied during their time at the premises.
With a rich history, a commitment to inclusivity, and a range of engaging activities, Worthing Indoor Bowls Club is the go-to destination for bowlers of all skill levels in Worthing and the surrounding areas.
