About
Worsley Cricket Club, founded in 1846 by the 1st Earl Ellesmere, has long been a fixture in Manchester’s cricket scene. Established to benefit estate workers and those building St Marks Church, the club resumed play after a brief interruption during WW1 and has kept its grounds active with both friendly and competitive matches ever since.
Located off Walkden Road since the late 1800s, Worsley Cricket Club is a founding member of the Greater Manchester Cricket League and boasts ECB Clubmark status, indicating its commitment to high cricket standards.
The club features three senior teams: the 1st and 2nd XIs compete in league matches on Saturdays and cup matches on Sundays, while the An XI also plays on Sundays. Junior teams have evening matches during the week. Worsley Cricket Club always welcomes new players, inviting them to join practice sessions: seniors on Tuesday evenings and juniors on Friday evenings.
Additionally, the club offers an online shop via their kit supplier, ICON, where members can buy their gear. Local businesses lend their support, for which the club is grateful.
Worsley Cricket Club’s website (worsleycc.com) is regularly updated with news and information for members and fans, including player profiles for all senior XIs.
Each year, Worsley Cricket Club holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) open to all members. The meeting covers critical club matters, including reports from secretaries, the treasurer, and team captains, as well as remarks from the chairman. Officer elections are also conducted, sometimes by secret ballot.
With a legacy of commitment and community, Worsley Cricket Club in Manchester remains a cornerstone for local cricket enthusiasts.
