Woodley Goju Ryu Karate Club, located in Reading, is a friendly and inclusive martial arts club that focuses on teaching the traditional Okinawan Martial Arts of Goju Ryu Karate. Led by Sensei Amie Benton, a highly experienced martial artist with a 3rd-degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate, the club is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for students of all ages and abilities.
At Woodley Goju Ryu Karate Club, students will not only learn the physical aspects of karate but also important life skills and character development. The club aims to instil values such as integrity, courtesy, indomitable spirit, humility, and respect for oneself and others. Students are encouraged to develop fitness, flexibility, stamina, confidence, and self-defence skills, while also learning how to say “No” to unhealthy peer pressure and adopt peaceful resolution strategies in conflicts.
Independent studies have shown that Okinawan Martial Arts, such as Goju Ryu Karate, can have numerous benefits, including improved mental focus, increased attention span, heightened awareness, and effective self-defence skills. However, the club emphasises that the strength of an individual is not measured by their ability to fight, but rather their ability to avoid fights and handle challenging situations with composure.
Woodley Goju Ryu Karate Club offers a welcoming and supportive community where students can improve their fitness levels, enhance their balance and coordination, and meet new people while having fun. Through training, students can also enhance their focus, self-confidence, and discipline, developing a strong mind and body.
Sensei Amie Benton, the instructor at Woodley Goju Ryu Karate Club, has a wealth of experience in martial arts, starting her training in 1992. She holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate and is also a qualified personal trainer, FA level 2 football coach, and first-aider. Sensei Amie is dedicated to creating a safe environment for her students and has the necessary child protection training, including NSPCC child protection in sport, a DBS check, and relevant insurance.
The club is affiliated with the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do International (GKI) and maintains high standards of martial arts under the guidance of Chief Instructor Sensei James Rousseau (9th Dan) and Sensei Len Sims (8th Dan). Sensei James and Sensei Len actively train to enhance their skills and ensure quality teaching within the GKI.
For safeguarding purposes, Woodley Goju Ryu Karate Club has a robust safeguarding policy to protect the well-being of children and vulnerable adults. The club prioritises the safety and welfare of its members and believes in upholding the rights and protection of all individuals.
