Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club, located in Sutton-Upon-Derwent, York, is widely recognised as one of the best cricket clubs in the York region. Established in 1942 during World War Two, the club began as a recreational cricket club for local farmworkers and has since grown into a family-oriented club that welcomes players of all ages and abilities.
The club takes pride in its tradition of developing talent, which has been the foundation of its outstanding success for over 75 years. Woodhouse Grange has won the National Village Cup a record four times and has reached the finals at Lord's for a total of seven times, more than any other club in the competition. As members of the ECB Yorkshire premier League North, Woodhouse Grange's 1st XI plays at a high level just below County 2nd XIs in the cricketing pyramid. The club also has three additional teams competing in the York & District Senior Cricket League.
With an impressive history of league and cup triumphs over several decades, Woodhouse Grange maintains its sustained success in the world of cricket. The club has two excellent pitches, good practise facilities, and a welcoming clubhouse. Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club runs a total of 12 different teams, catering to players of all abilities and ages. This includes four Saturday teams, with the 1st XI playing in the Yorkshire top League North. The club also has five junior teams covering various age groups, two evening league teams, and a Grey Fox XI specifically for players over 50.
While the players are the most important members of the club, Woodhouse Grange also values the contributions of non-playing volunteers. The club encourages individuals interested in cricket to get involved in various roles such as ground maintenance, scoring, umpiring, and assisting with teas. The dedication of these non-playing members has been crucial to the club's ongoing success.
Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club welcomes new players of all age groups and abilities, whether they aspire to play at the highest level or simply want to enjoy the game. Junior cricketers aged 7 or older are particularly encouraged to join. For those interested in getting involved with the club in a non-playing capacity, there are numerous areas where volunteers can contribute.
