Wirral CP Boxing Club, located in Ellesmere Port, is a renowned boxing gym that has been serving the community since its inception in 1981. The club was initially formed by a group of work colleagues from the Vauxhall car plant, namely Mick Whitley, Frank Newton, and Dave McDonnell, who took on the respective roles of Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary.
At first, the club's training sessions were held in the dressing room of the football/rugby team, overseen by members John Kennedy and Peter Phelan. However, recognising the need for a more suitable space, the club acquired the use of the old foreman's canteen. In October 1982, the club became affiliated with the West Lancashire & Cheshire division of the ABA of England, taking on the name Vauxhall Motors Amateur Boxing Club.
The club's motto, “WE NEVER TURN ANYONE AWAY,” reflects their commitment to providing a safe environment for youngsters to learn the art of amateur boxing. In December 1982, the club hosted its first boxing show at the Vauxhall Motors Sports & Social Club, marking the beginning of a successful journey. Over the years, the club's athletes have represented England and Great Britain at both senior and junior tournaments, securing national titles at every level.
As a club, Wirral CP Boxing Club has expanded its horizons beyond the local community, travelling to various destinations in Europe and the United States. They have participated in team matches across Scotland, Wales, The Republic of Ireland, Holland, Denmark, Germany, and Spain. Their trips to New York City in 1998, 2000, and 2006 were particularly noteworthy, with a TV documentary named “Squaring Up” capturing their 2000 visit, bringing well-deserved attention to the club and the sport of Amateur Boxing.
In 2000, Vauxhall Motors requested the club to relocate from its home of 19 years due to demolition plans. After extensive negotiations, the club found a new home in the Gas Distribution Depot in Little Sutton. This move proved to be a significant turning point as it placed the club within the heart of the community, enabling them to make a greater impact.
In 2008, the club sadly lost its President, Mr. Jack Thornley, who had played a pivotal role in helping them achieve numerous milestones. To honour his contributions, the gym was named “Jacks Gym. ” The same year, the club became involved in a community-based campaign known as “Gloves Not Gangs.
” Supported by then Sports Minister, the Right Honourable Andrew Burnham, this campaign aimed to engage at-risk youngsters and deter them from engaging in anti-social behaviour linked to gang culture. The club continues to actively participate in this campaign.
In April 2010, Wirral CP Boxing Club achieved Clubmark accreditation, becoming the first club in Cheshire and only the 13th out of over 700 boxing clubs in England to receive this recognition. Clubmark, introduced by Sport England in 2002, serves as an operating standard for all sports clubs.
While the club's affiliation with Vauxhall Motors Sports & Social Club came to an end in 2011, the desire to continue serving the community remained strong. After negotiating a lease, the club rebranded as Wirral ABC and affiliated with the Community Police Clubs of Great Britain and The Merseyside & Cheshire Amateur Boxing Association.
The future of Wirral CP Boxing Club is bright as they continue to provide a positive and safe environment for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to learn and excel in the sport of boxing. With a dedicated team of trainers and a strong community support network, the club aims to empower individuals, instil discipline, and promote a healthy lifestyle through their boxing programmes.
