

Welcome to Wing Tsun Academy, a renowned martial arts and fitness centre located in the heart of Wellington on Cuba Street. Our academy is dedicated to teaching the traditional Chinese martial art of Wing Tsun Kuen, also known as Wing Chun.
At Wing Tsun Academy, we offer Kung Fu classes for both adults and children. Our training method is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the practical and theoretical aspects of Wing Chun. Whether you are a beginner or have experience in martial arts, our classes are tailored to suit all ages and genders, focusing on building fitness levels in an enjoyable and controlled environment that emphasises respect and non-aggressiveness.
Joining the Wing Tsun Academy is a unique experience, as we take new students in groups every 2 to 6 weeks. This allows you to start your training journey alongside others who are also new to our academy, creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. You won't have to worry about joining a class of more experienced individuals by yourself. The teachers can dedicate more time to content that is relevant to your group, ensuring a personalised learning experience.
In the Wing Chun system, we teach martial arts using a similar approach to how one would learn the game of chess. Just as in chess, you start by learning the basic movements and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each “piece. ” As you progress, you develop strategies and learn how to apply your knowledge against different opponents. This prepares you for real-life situations, where Wing Chun practitioners respond purposefully and adaptively to unique combinations of circumstances and opponents.
Unlike many other martial arts styles, Wing Chun drills are not set moves or rehearsals. They serve as a means to develop an understanding of energy, applicability, timing, strategy, and more aspects of your response. This training method allows you to develop sensitivity and speed in your movements, enabling a fast response in any situation without the need to learn a set response for every possible attack variation.
Our academy places great emphasis on fitness and flexibility. The fitness training in our foundation classes is suitable for all fitness levels, allowing you to work at your own pace and gradually increase difficulty as your fitness improves. Our focus is on safe bodyweight exercises designed to reduce joint stress while providing maximum benefits in terms of strength, power, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, flexibility, agility, balance, and core strength, all of which are crucial for Wing Chun, are also trained in our classes.
Wing Tsun Academy is not just a martial arts school but a full-scale facility that offers a range of classes to the Wellington community. Aside from Wing Tsun kung fu training for adults and children, we also provide fitness classes, private lessons, philosophy and meditation sessions, woodman man training, weapons training, and self-defence classes.
