To observe a class before deciding to join. Our instructors at Winchester Judo & Martial Arts Club are highly qualified and experienced in their respective martial arts. They bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to each class, ensuring that students receive thorough and high-quality instruction.
Our classes cater to a wide range of ages and skill levels. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned martial artist, there's a class for you. We offer classes specifically designed for children, as well as classes for adults. No matter your age or fitness level, you can benefit from the physical and mental training that martial arts provides.
Judo is a popular choice among our members. Founded by Jigoro Kano, it is both a traditional martial art and an Olympic sport. Judo emphasises techniques that allow a smaller and weaker individual to overcome a larger and stronger opponent. It is a dynamic and engaging martial art that provides an excellent workout while teaching valuable self-defence skills.
Aikido, on the other hand, is a martial art that focuses on blending with an opponent's energy and redirecting it. It was founded by Morihei Ueshiba and incorporates both armed and empty-handed techniques. Aikido emphasises harmony and fluidity of movement, making it suitable for people of all ages and physical abilities.
For those interested in classical swordsmanship, we also offer classes in the Katori Shinto Ryu school. Founded in 1447, this style of swordsmanship encompasses various weapons and techniques, including sword, staff, naginata, spear, and the combined use of long and short swords. It provides a unique opportunity to learn the historical and cultural aspects of Japanese martial arts.
Child protection is a top priority at Winchester Judo & Martial Arts Club. Our club welfare/child protection officer, Vicky Gilbertson, is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. All our coaches have undergone an enhanced DBS check, ensuring that they are suitable to work with children. We strictly adhere to the British Aikido Association Child Protection and Adult Safeguarding policies, prioritising the safety and well-being of our members.
