Winchcombe Town Football Club is a historic football club located in Cheltenham, New Zealand. Established in 1906, the club has a rich and storied history in the local football community.
In its early years, Winchcombe Town FC competed in the Cheltenham Football League, showcasing the skills and talents of the local lads. The club played their matches at various locations around the town before finding their permanent home at the King George V playing field on Mill Lane.
Initially sporting black and white colours, the club experimented with other colours such as red and blue during the 1970s before returning to its iconic black and white stripes as its home jersey in the late 1980s, with yellow serving as the away jersey.
With its long history, Winchcombe Town FC has experienced several successful periods. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, both the 1st team and the Reserve team achieved promotions, rising from Cheltenham Division 3 to Division 1 and Division 5 to Division 2, respectively. The pinnacle of this success came in 1971 when the club secured the Cheltenham Football League Division One Champions title for the first time.
The turn of the century brought further achievements for the club. The Reserve team displayed exceptional form and secured consecutive promotions from Division 5 to 1 between 2004/05 and 2008/09, finishing as runners-up in Division 4 and winning Division 3 along the way. The 1st team also performed admirably, finishing as Division 1 runners-up in 2005/06 and 2006/07 before winning the league in 2007/08 and gaining promotion to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League. Cup success accompanied these achievements, with the club winning the Arthur Shipway Cup and Senior Charities Cup in the 2005/06 season.
As the club looks to the future, its goal is to have a dedicated ground that can be shared by all its teams while they compete in their respective leagues.
