The West Midlands Golf League, founded in 1967, is a non-profit golf club located in Walsall. The club comprises 36 member clubs, including its original 24 clubs. Its primary goal is to promote golf and foster friendship among members of golf clubs in the West Midlands and surrounding areas through competitive handicap golf.
The League operates on an annual subscription fee system, whereby each club pays a fee that goes towards administration costs. A full balance sheet is presented at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to ensure transparency and accountability. The League's administration is fully electronic, utilising email, banking systems, and a website to communicate and update members on fixtures, results, and other important information.
Each zone within the League is administered by a Zone Secretary, who is responsible for managing fixtures and results within their respective zone. The Zone Secretary is elected at the AGM, along with other committee members such as the Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary.
The League offers two main trophies for clubs to compete for. The first is the Roberts-Levine Trophy, which is awarded to the winning club in the knockout stage of the competition. The top two clubs from each zone, along with the four best third-place clubs, move on to the knockout stage. Knockout matches are played home and away, with the final taking place at a neutral venue.
The victorious club is then declared the West Midlands League Champions for that year.
The League also introduced another knockout competition called the Lewis Trophy. This competition is for the third-place clubs from each zone that did not qualify for the Roberts-Levine Trophy, as well as the clubs finishing fourth in each zone. Similar to the Roberts-Levine Trophy, knockout matches for the Lewis Trophy are played on a home and away basis, with the final being held at a neutral venue.
The West Midlands Golf League prides itself on its commitment to promoting golf and fostering camaraderie among its member clubs. It welcomes new clubs who are interested in joining the League and encourages them to reach out to arrange a meeting or discuss further details. Overall, the League provides a platform for golf enthusiasts to compete, build friendships, and enjoy the sport in a competitive yet friendly environment.
