West Essex Bowmen, led by Alex, is a buzzing archery club in South Ockendon, nestled in Belhus Woods Country Park. Founded in 1981, it's now one of the biggest in the UK, welcoming archers of all skill levels to have a go.
Archers can enjoy Belhus Woods all year round during daylight (whenever the park's open), and in the winter, they cosy up at The Ockendon Academy for Friday night sessions from 18:30 to 21:00, September to April.
Keen to try archery? Alex and the West Essex Bowmen team run beginners' courses in April and September, over two Saturdays. Each four-hour session covers the basics, led by top-notch coaches.
Not just for their own members, West Essex Bowmen hosts open competitions, welcoming archers from any club for some friendly, yet spirited, shooting. Remember to pre-book your spot through their shop page.
Alex and the team run a tight ship with monthly committee meetings on the first Wednesday. Any member can attend with notice, though only committee members vote. The AGM in late January invites members to vie for committee spots, followed by a fun quiz.
Membership fees, due in April, are £90 for adults (18-59), £80 for those over 60, and £30 for juniors, plus Archery GB affiliation fees (£48 for adults, £12 for juniors, 18-25s, and archers with disabilities). There's also a £5 County Affiliation fee.
West Essex Bowmen, under Alex’s leadership, is all about building a supportive archery community. With skilled coaches, excellent facilities, and competitive events, it’s the perfect place to sharpen your archery skills and hang out with fellow archers.
