Western Australian Speleological Group Inc (WASG) is a highly active caving club based in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1959, the club boasts a rich history of exploring and preserving Western Australia's unique cave systems.
Our primary focus is on the adventurous sport of caving, also known as speleology, which involves the exploration of caves, tunnels, and underground formations. Our members range from experienced cavers to beginners with a passion for exploring the hidden wonders of the underground world.
WASG is committed to promoting the conservation and protection of Western Australia's subterranean ecosystems. We actively participate in various projects and expeditions to study the flora, fauna, and natural features found within these unique environments. Our recent Christmas Island Expedition in 2018, in collaboration with Curtin University and the Ecological Society of Western Australia, aimed to conduct a comprehensive survey of Christmas Island's subterranean ecosystems using cutting-edge genetic detection technology.
As a club, we also engage in restoration work within cave systems. One notable project was the restoration of Crystal Cave, located in Yanchep National Park, which was vandalised in 2006. Working closely with the authorities, we contributed our expertise in mapping and assessing the damage and eventually undertook the rectification work to restore the cave's natural beauty.
In addition to our exploration and conservation efforts, WASG actively participates in conferences, trips, and events related to speleology. We organise trips to various cave systems, both locally and internationally, allowing our members to expand their knowledge and experience in caving.
The Western Australian Speleological Group is a welcoming community that values camaraderie, safety, and respect for the unique environments we explore. Whether you're a seasoned caver or a beginner looking to embark on a thrilling underground adventure, we invite you to join us and be a part of our passionate caving community.
