Experience the thrill of being a cowboy for a day at the Western Experience Day held at Meldon Farm with Dartmoor Riding Holidays. Participants are invited to pull on their jeans, cowboy boots, and cowboy hat for a day full of cattle work, team penning, and ranch sorting. Hosted on superb Quarter horses, this arena-based event is limited to a maximum of 10 riders.
The day kicks off with a delicious breakfast in an authentic western-style guest lodge, where guests will meet the trainers and fellow riders. Participants will then get acquainted with the Quarter horses, learn how to tack western, and be assigned their mounts for the day. Basic drills and exercises will be conducted to familiarize everyone with their horses, with a variety of Quarter horses available to suit different riders.
The program includes working with cattle to showcase how horses react in their presence and perform basic maneuvers around them. Lunch will be provided in the guest lodge or around a campfire, followed by activities such as cutting cattle, team penning, and ranch sorting. The day concludes with tea and cakes around a campfire, weather permitting.
Overnight accommodation is available in shepherd huts on-site, with full access to the guest lodge facilities. Rates for the 2024 Western Experience Days are £250 per person, with various dates available from April to September. Transportation can be arranged from Okehampton Station, with options for on-site or local accommodation. Please note that this experience is not suitable for novice or beginner riders.
