West Coast Academy of Martial Arts (WCAMA) is a renowned self-defence school located in Southern River. Our school is dedicated to teaching realistic self-defence techniques that empower our students to protect themselves in real-life situations.

Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience, we offer classes for both children and adults at all fitness and skill levels. Our programmes are designed to cater to the varied experience and skill levels within our school, with both Beginners and Advanced Classes available.

For adults, we offer Freestyle Martial Arts (Self-defence) classes. These classes focus on teaching practical self-defence techniques while also building confidence and improving fitness. Students learn a range of skills including fighting stances, ground fighting, striking, kicks, boxing combinations, protective falling techniques, take-downs, choke escapes, joint lock holds, and grab escapes. Beyond physical skills, our adult programme also emphasises self-discipline, situational awareness, and overall fitness and conditioning.

We also offer specialised classes for adults in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Freestyle Wrestling. Our BJJ programme is affiliated with the esteemed Will Machado Jiu Jitsu Banner, and our Wrestling programme offers training starting from the 3rd of February 2024. Our adult classes are taught by our highly skilled Academy's Head Instructor, Rodney Parkes, who continues to train with his own coaches to provide top-notch instruction.

For children and teens, we have Martial Arts classes tailored to different age groups. Our Pre-Juniors class (5 to 8 years old) is held on Monday to Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings, while our Juniors class (9 to 12 years old) is held on the same days in the afternoon and Saturday mornings. Teens aged 13 to 15 years old can join our classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the evening. In these classes, our younger students learn a variety of self-defence techniques, such as protective falling, takedowns and throws, ground defence, and grab and choke escapes.

Additionally, they are taught about situational awareness, stranger danger, and protective behaviours. Beyond self-defence skills, our children's martial arts programme aims to build character and develop important life skills, including confidence and self-discipline.

At West Coast Academy of Martial Arts, we prioritise a safe and respectful training environment. Our students learn respect for their instructors, training area, and fellow students through following dojo etiquette. They are also encouraged to uphold the 7 Virtues of the Bushido code, which encompass respect, courage, honour, compassion, honesty, loyalty, and integrity. By instilling these values, we aim to create confident individuals who can handle themselves with grace and are less likely to be targeted as victims of bullying or assault.
