The classes at Wessex Taekwondo Association are structured into three general age groups. The “Mighty Marvels” class is designed for children aged 4 and upwards. In this class, children are introduced to Taekwondo and are nurtured through the process of martial arts. The Mighty Marvels programme focuses on developing motor skills, listening skills, and a foundation for success in life.
The programme aims to increase attention span, enhance coordination, and instil respect and discipline. Children also learn about the importance of Modesty, Etiquette, Perseverance, Self-Control, and the philosophy of non-conflict self-defence. The training received in Mighty Marvels carries over into everyday life. Classes are held on Thursday and Friday at various venues in Parkstone, Poole, and at Wessex Elite Training and Rehab Centre in Poole.
From mid-May 2021, there will also be a Saturday class in Parkstone, Poole.
The unique programme in Mighty Marvels is designed to be fun and consistent with the child's developmental level. The curriculum is based on the Marvel Super Heroes, with exercises mimicking children's favourite Marvel characters. All classes aim to prepare children to move to the main Tae kwon do classes, with a grading system that gives them a head start on the Taekwondo Grading Ladder. Upon completing the Mighty Marvels journey, students achieve the rank of 8th Kup (Yellow Belt) in World Taekwondo.
There are numerous benefits to enrolling in the Mighty Marvels programme. Physical coordination, balance, fitness, and control are emphasised, along with the development of basic motor skills. Mentally, the programme enhances focus, memory, discipline, and emotional confidence. Students also learn important personal and social skills such as leadership, respect, cooperation, teamwork, sharing, listening skills, honesty, and a positive “can do” attitude.
Testimonials from satisfied parents highlight the positive impact Wessex Taekwondo has on children. For example, one parent, Clifton, shared that their son Will had been training at Wessex Taekwondo for almost four years and has grown in confidence, gained knowledge, and enjoys attending class each week.
Like many martial arts, Taekwondo uses a coloured belt grading system, which also applies to the Mighty Marvels programme. The grading tests the students' knowledge and understanding of the curriculum. Completion of the Mighty Marvels programme leads to the achievement of a Yellow Belt (8th Kup) in World Taekwondo.
