Weaver Sailing and Ski Club, located on the lower reaches of the River Weaver near Frodsham in Cheshire, has been a prominent sailing club since its establishment in 1958. With two and a half miles of water available for dinghy sailing and canoeing, as well as one mile for water-skiing, the club offers a diverse range of water activities suitable for beginners and experts alike.
The River Weaver, known for its minimal current, provides an ideal setting for learning and practising various water sports. The club boasts a modern clubhouse equipped with a social area, kitchen, male and female changing facilities, and even a sauna, ensuring members have access to all the necessary amenities for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
New members interested in sailing or canoeing are always welcome to join the club, while the ski section membership is currently full for new ski boat owners. For further information about membership, individuals can refer to the Membership page on the club's website.
The leadership of Weaver Sailing and Ski Club comprises dedicated individuals who are passionate about their roles within the club. Commodore Paul Brassington, who has been a member for 20 years, leads a forward-looking committee committed to safeguarding the best interests of the club. Vice Commodore Andy Garland joined in 2005 to introduce his son to the joys of being on the water and has since become an active committee member. John Hamilton, the members secretary, has enjoyed being a part of the club for two decades and appreciates the friendly atmosphere and talented members that make the club truly special.
Additionally, Weaver Sailing and Ski Club is proud to partner with two community groups: the Frodsham Sea Scouts and Vibe Outdoors. These groups offer unique outdoor activities for schoolchildren and young adults in the North West region. The club welcomes individuals of all ages and abilities from diverse backgrounds and is committed to supporting these groups that provide opportunities for participants to engage in waterborne activities. In fact, some members have even gone on to represent the country in their chosen water sport after starting their journey at the Weaver Sailing and Ski Club.
The club has a rich history, particularly surrounding its former clubhouse, The Staintondale. This Mersey Flat barge served as the club's headquarters since its inception and possesses a significant historical value, having previously transported grain along the River Mersey. Built by W J Yarwood & Sons in Northwich and weighing in at 92 tonnes, The Staintondale carries not only the stories of its years as a clubhouse, but also its previous life as a working vessel.
Overall, Weaver Sailing and Ski Club is a well-established and inclusive club that offers a range of water activities, state-of-the-art facilities, and a welcoming community. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a complete beginner, the club is eager to provide an enjoyable and memorable experience on the picturesque River Weaver.
