Wandsworth Youth River Club, based in London, is a thriving club that offers a range of exciting activities for youth members. With a strong emphasis on water-oriented activities, the club provides excellent facilities and training opportunities for members over the age of 8.
The club operates four different sections, catering to different age groups. The Beavers section is open to children aged 5 to 8 and meets on Wednesdays from 1800-1930hrs. The Cubs section is for children aged 8 to 10 and meets on Fridays from 1830-2015hrs. The Scouts section is open to those aged 10 to 15 and meets on Wednesdays from 1930hrs-2115hrs.
Lastly, the Explorers section is for young adults aged 15 to 18 and also meets on Wednesdays from 1930hrs-2115hrs.
The club places great importance on traditional values and character development. Honesty, loyalty, good behaviour, and teamwork are strongly encouraged throughout the group, with an element of discipline. This is reflected in the smart uniform, which includes the distinctive and unique 'Marie Louise badge. Princess Marie Louise, the Grand-Daughter of Queen Victoria, took a keen interest in the 4th Streatham Sea Scouts in 1919, granting her consent for the group to become her own Scout Group.
The group proudly wears a scarf of Royal Purple and is known as 'Princess Marie Louise's Own'.
Membership of the Group is open to young people from all faiths and cultures, aged 5–18 years old. Before being invested into one of the sections, all members are required to take a promise and are expected to uphold the values of the Promise and Law.
One of the highlights of the club is its water-based activities. The club has access to excellent facilities and crafts for training, with a permanent base at Putney. Safety is of utmost importance, and the club maintains high standards in boating activities. Members have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities including canoeing, dinghy and gig pulling, sailing, and power craft.
Since 1947, Wandsworth Youth River Club has proudly held Royal Navy Recognition. This prestigious distinction is only granted to a maximum of 101 Sea Scout Groups in the U. K. The club undergoes an annual inspection to ensure standards of smartness and achievement are maintained.
