Master Philip Lear, the founder of Vision Taekwon-Do, has a fascinating personal journey that led him to establish the school. In 1994, at the age of 23, he moved to Malaysia to pursue a career as a post-production editor for TV commercials. It was during this time that he encountered Master Tan, an instructor from Malaysia, during a training session in Tunbridge Wells, England. Inspired by this encounter, Master Lear planned his move to Kuala Lumpur, centred around training with Master Tan, whom he greatly admired.
However, finding Master Tan proved to be a challenge due to the commonness of his surname in Malaysia. After extensive searching and weeks of effort, Master Lear finally located Master Tan in the suburb of Section 16, Petaling Jaya. Master Tan's old-school teaching style pushed Master Lear to improve and strive for excellence. Despite initially feeling confident as a black belt, Master Lear quickly realised that he still had much to learn.
For two years, Master Lear dedicated himself to training with Master Tan, often practising Chon-Ji, Dan-Gun, and Do-San, the foundational patterns of Taekwon-Do. Master Tan's teaching style and the deep desire to make him proud motivated Master Lear to persevere and continually challenge himself.
Now, with his own martial arts school, Vision Taekwon-Do, Master Philip Lear aims to pass on the invaluable lessons he learned from Master Tan to his own students, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment where students can grow and excel in their martial arts journey.
