Val Deakin Dance Theatre

" Val Deakin Dance Theatre, located in New Plymouth, is a renowned dance school that offers a wide range of classes including ballet, jazz, tap, modern (contemporary), character dance, and mime. With a rich history spanning 50 years, the school has played a pivotal role in shaping the dance community in Taranaki.

Founded in 1973 by Val Deakin, a prominent figure in the dance industry, the school has produced many accomplished dancers who have gone on to have successful careers in dance and theatre. Some notable alumni include Michael Parmenter, Nigel Gallienne, Toby Parsons, and Rebekah Claridge. Val herself has had a remarkable career, having trained at the Royal Ballet School in London and performed with prestigious ballet companies in the United States and Turkey.

The Val Deakin Dance Theatre Trust was also established by Val, allowing dancers of all ages and abilities to come together and perform a diverse range of dance works. Over the years, the trust has presented nearly 600 performances, including large-scale classical ballets such as The Nutcracker, Coppelia, and Cinderella, as well as smaller works in various venues throughout New Zealand. The trust has even expanded its reach to include performances in gardens and rest homes, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy of dance.
