Uechi-Go-Ryu Karate (UGRK)

Uechi-Go-Ryu Karate (UGRK) is a reputable martial arts school located in Kensington, Australia. Founded by Valentino J Cox, a highly experienced and knowledgeable instructor, UGRK offers traditional Karate, self-defence, and fitness programmes to individuals of all ages and skill levels.

Valentino Cox began his karate journey in Boston, USA, under the instruction of Shihan Michael Zwerdling. Known for his emphasis on patience, self-control, and respect for the Uechi-Ryu tradition, Shihan Zwerdling agreed to allow Valentino to join the dojo at the young age of 10, despite his general rule of only accepting students over 18 years old.

Valentino's training in Uechi-Ryu was intensive and focused. He trained diligently for six years, attending multiple general and advanced classes per week. Although he satisfied all technical and physical requirements for a first-degree black belt, he couldn't officially be promoted until he turned 18, as per the traditional Uechi style philosophy.

At 16, Valentino expanded his knowledge by studying USA Urban Goju Ryu and Shorinji Kempo under the guidance of Master David Shim. Excelling in kata, full contact kumite, and Okinawan weaponry, Valentino achieved his Shodan (first-degree black belt) under Master Shim's esteemed leadership. He continued his studies under Master Shim, who eventually awarded him a 7th-degree black belt and the title of Kyoshi in USA Urban Goju Ryu and Shorinji Kempo.

In 2007, Valentino relocated to Adelaide, Australia, where he established his own unique style of martial arts called Uechi-Go-Ryu. This style combines the traditional Okinawan and Japanese styles of Uechi Ryu, Goju-Ryu, and Shorinji Kempo. UGRK places great emphasis on the traditional Japanese karate principles of patience, courtesy, as well as the practical application of kata techniques to Bunkai and kumite.

Rachel Sag, a dedicated instructor, joined UGRK in 2014. Initially a complete beginner with no prior karate experience, Rachel fell in love with the art form and the martial arts culture as a whole. Her journey has been one of enjoyment, challenge, and personal growth. Despite the difficulties that come with being a mature beginner, Rachel persevered and is now a 2nd Dan Senpai Instructor at UGRK.
