Of all ages. Established by the Yut Kung (Moon Bear) Kung Fu Academy, Canberra Dragon Dance has quickly gained recognition as the largest and most professional team of its kind in Canberra.
Led by Sifu (Dr) Wilson Lo, a highly experienced kung fu practitioner with 35 years of experience, the UC Kung Fu Association offers classes in practical self-defence for students of all backgrounds. Initially focused on kids and teenagers, the academy now accepts students from the age of 8 and up. The teachings are based on three main kung fu styles: Yee Kuen (Yi Quan) Kung Fu, Cheng Style Ba Gwa, and the Filipino art of the Black Eagle Eskrima for weaponry.
At the Yut Kung Fu Academy, learning kung fu extends beyond attending classes. Students are encouraged to practise at home with the aid of written materials and online videos. The academy follows a traditional approach, with students progressing through gradings that involve physical, oral, and written tests under stress. Written workbooks and assignments are also part of the curriculum.
While competing at local tournaments is optional, the academy provides extra training for students who wish to participate.
The Yut Kung Fu Academy is not just a place to learn self-defence; it is a tight-knit community that treats each other like family. Students, and even their parents, forge friendships and often engage in social activities organised by the academy. Sifu Lo's guidance and nurturing approach create an environment where students feel supported and grow both physically and mentally.
In addition to kung fu classes, the academy established Canberra Dragon Dance, Canberra's premier professional Asian Performing Arts team. This team combines self-defence displays with wushu, lion dance, dragon dance, and Chinese percussion to create interactive shows for various events, festivals, school workshops, and public performances. The team has become an integral part of Canberra's cultural fabric, captivating audiences of all ages with their stunning performances.
