Tshikan Traditional Karate and Kobud, located in Courtenay, is a martial arts school offering classes for individuals ages 7 and up. The dojo is a family-friendly environment where students can learn traditional Okinawan karate and kobudo techniques. Sensei Mac Newton, who holds yon dan level in goju ryu karate and godan level in kobudo, provides guidance and instruction to students, with regular input from his teachers in Okinawa and Japan.
Students at Tshikan become part of the International Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Federation, the oldest and largest Okinawan traditional karate organization in the world. The school offers classes in both karate (empty hand) and kobudo (traditional weapons), allowing students to develop self-defence skills, physical fitness, strength, flexibility, focus, self-discipline, confidence, leadership abilities, and empathy.
The dojo's class schedule includes sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for all skill levels. The school also offers information on the differences between karate and kobudo, as well as testimonials from students who have benefited from their training at Tshikan. We welcome families with children ages 7 and up, plus teens and adults. Everyone trains in a respectful environment focused on self-improvement for mind and body.
Karate students of Toshikan dojo become part of the IOGKF, the International Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Federation.
