Trowbridge Judo Club, located on Innox Road in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, has been a pillar of the community since its establishment in 1954. In 1985, the club moved to its own purpose-built Dojo, solidifying its commitment to providing a dedicated space for Judo training. The club warmly welcomes players from the age of 7, with the senior section also accommodating players transitioning from juniors to seniors at the age of 16.
Trowbridge Judo Club prides itself on being inclusive of all abilities, genders, ethnicity, and religious beliefs. With a diverse range of enthusiastic learners, the club's voluntary coaches ensure that beginners, advanced learners, and returning players receive excellent instruction. The coaches recognise that judo not only imparts valuable sport skills and knowledge but also emphasises self-defence, fitness, and self-discipline.
To foster growth and friendly competition among its members, the club has established strong links and relationships with other clubs in Wiltshire. Collaborative training sessions and competitions offer the opportunity for players to refine their skills and engage in healthy competition. Trowbridge Judo Club further extends its influence beyond its walls, providing additional skills sessions for local organisations such as the Bradford on Avon Scouts and Trowbridge Rugby Club. The club has also lent support to local schools by assisting in the development and assessment of players for their GCSE Physical Education qualifications and DofE Awards.
In addition to their dedication to Judo, members of Trowbridge Judo Club actively participate in community outreach. The club's demonstration squad has performed for numerous local primary schools, events such as the Southwick and Hilperton village fetes, and most recently, the Trowbridge Carnival Fete. The club's players also contribute their skills and efforts to promote and raise funds for the BBC Children in Need Appeal, raising thousands of pounds for the charity over the past five years.
Safety and first aid training are of paramount importance to Trowbridge Judo Club. The club benefits from having an Emergency First Response First Aid instructor who leads training sessions for all coaches and instructors. Moreover, the club incorporates this training into its Junior Instructors Award scheme, enabling young players to use it as part of their GCSE PE Leadership Qualification.
The club's motto, “Do Not Make Excuses; Do Not Give Up. Tomorrow You Will Be Better,” reflects its commitment to instilling discipline, perseverance, and personal growth in its members. Senior Coach Darren Mallows, a 3rd Dan, leads the coaching team, supported by Coach Kerrylee Mallows, a 2nd Dan, and Instructor Ben Rawlings, a 1st Dan.
For those interested in becoming part of Trowbridge Judo Club, junior mat fees are 5 per week, payable at the beginning of each month. The annual membership fee for the club's own licence is 15, while the British Judo Association (BJA) licence costs 27 for the first year and 24 for renewals. Club membership is 10 per year, and there is a grading fee of 7. 50.
