Troupe Sandokwa

Troupe de danse Huronne-Wendat Sandokwa, meaning the sacred bird eagle at the top of each Totem, is a dance company based in Wendake. Composed of 15 indigenous members from the Huron-Wendat nation, located in the Village des Hurons/Wendake just 15 kilometers north of Quebec City, Troupe Sandokwa showcases the rich cultural traditions of the Huron-Wendat people.

The costumes worn by Troupe Sandokwa are meticulously crafted by skilled artisans using materials such as moose, deer, and beaver skins. These authentic and beautiful costumes not only add to the spectacular performances but also pay homage to the traditions of their ancestors. The dancers proudly wear the traditional hre or chiefs' gustowa, adding to the authenticity of their performances.

Since 1976, Troupe Sandokwa has been dedicated to sharing the history, traditions, and customs of the Huron-Wendat people through their folklore. They have participated in various events such as the Quebec Winter Carnival, Canada Day celebrations, congresses, telethons, and more. With national performances in Ontario and New Brunswick, Sandokwa has also gained international recognition, touring in Italy in 1996 and Switzerland in 1999.

In addition to representing the indigenous peoples of Canada, Troupe Sandokwa has also had the privilege of representing the entire country on an international stage. Their performance at the International Folklore Gathering in Switzerland during the turn of the millennium was televised worldwide, reaching an audience of 300 million to 1 billion viewers. Troupe Sandokwa takes pride in their cultural heritage and strives to share it with audiences around the globe.
