The Townsville Road Runners Inc. is a sports club in Townsville that was established in 1972 by a dedicated group of runners. Originally known as the Townsville Marathon Club, the name was changed to Townsville Road Runners to better reflect the club's true nature and attract new members. Some founding members are still active participants today, showcasing the club's long-standing tradition.
The club welcomes and caters for runners of all ages and abilities. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, there are runs to suit everyone. For those who are new to running, less fit, or less competitive, most runs incorporate a short course, and the club also has a dedicated group of walkers. Members range from teenagers to participants well into their seventies and come from various walks of life.
On Saturday mornings, none of this matters as everyone gathers to enjoy a shared passion for running.
The Townsville Road Runners aims to promote running and jogging in Townsville through weekly club runs, races, and major events. The membership covers competitors of all ages and abilities, from individuals who simply enjoy running, walking, and keeping fit to some of Townsville's top runners.
Runs are held throughout the year, regardless of rain, summer heat, or cyclones (except during actual cyclone conditions). The official running season, where places and times are recorded, starts in March and finishes in October. The offseason, from October to February, consists of untimed runs held for fun, fitness, and friendship. The courses vary, ranging from flat roads to hills, tracks, and cross country.
Some are short and easy, while others are long and challenging.
During the year, regular training runs, including long runs, hills, and track sessions, are held weekly to help runners enhance their skills and fitness. The club also organises special events, including the 8K Commonwealth Games 2014 – Queen's baton relay.
Membership registration is available for those interested in joining the club. Members receive access to weekly news, event updates, and notifications of course changes through the club's e-newsletter and social media channels. Participating members are encouraged to volunteer at least twice per year for Saturday morning runs. Volunteering opportunities include recording, timing, setting up before, and packing down after the runs.
Townsville Road Runners Inc. is not only a sports club, but also a community of individuals who share a love for running, fitness, and friendship. Through their inclusive approach and diverse range of events, they strive to provide opportunities for runners of all levels to pursue their passion and achieve their goals.
