11TH OF APRIL DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. WE Apologise FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.
Tomaree Squash Club, located in Shoal Bay, has a rich history that dates back to 1997. It was established when a dedicated group of squash players from the Nelson Bay courts, which have since been demolished, were in search of new courts to continue their passion. The only remaining courts in the area were the two neglected and unused courts that the club now proudly calls home.
In its early days, the club started with 40 members who rallied together to rejuvenate the squash centre. With the help of volunteers, the centre was cleaned and painted, and a new beer fridge was brought in, marking the birth of the Tomaree Squash Club. Since then, the club has steadily grown and currently boasts a membership of up to 70 members, with many of them being part of the club since its inception.
The club is run by a hardworking committee that organises four competitions each year, including a Club Championship. Last year, with the support of its members, Tomaree Squash Club hosted the first-ever Nelson Bay Squash Open, attracting top-class players from across the state as well as local talents. Ongoing fundraising efforts have allowed the club to gradually improve its facilities, including the installation of a new floor on one court, with plans to replace another court this year.
Tomaree Squash Club takes great pride in its junior programmes, which have produced several talented players who have gone on to represent the state and the country. The club is also fortunate to have dedicated senior members who are committed to helping the juniors improve their game.
