TISKA Karate Reading is a karate club located in Reading, New Zealand, that offers classes for all ages and welcomes families. The club aims to develop balance, coordination, self-confidence, and discipline in its members through the practise of Shotokan Karate.
The Chief Instructor at TISKA Karate Reading is Gursharan Sahota. Gursharan was born in Kenya, East Africa, and moved to the UK at the age of 12. He began practising Karate at the age of 14 and achieved his black belt 1st dan (shodan) four years later. Currently an 8th Dan, Gursharan has competed in numerous kata and kumite events, including national and international competitions.
Gursharan's most significant experience in his karate career was a visit to Japan in 1984, where he had the opportunity to train in a Japanese dojo under the instruction of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. This trip proved to be a turning point for Gursharan, as it inspired him to dedicate his future to training and teaching karate as a way of life.
In 1981, Gursharan opened his first karate club in Luton/Dunstable, which eventually became the association's hombu (HQ). In 1993, he formed his own association, TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association), which is now one of the largest associations in the UK.
Gursharan is a passionate instructor who still teaches over 35 classes a week in the UK and regularly conducts master classes internationally. Throughout his career, he has brought hundreds of students of all ages up to black belt standard and beyond. He is also involved in charity work, providing financial support for surgeons to operate on underprivileged children in third world countries. Gursharan has funded various projects in India and is currently helping to fund the construction of a new school.
