TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) is a renowned Karate school located in Henley-on-Thames. The chief instructor of TISKA, Gursharan Sahota, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the club. Born in Kenya, East Africa, Gursharan moved to the UK at a young age and started practising Karate at 14. Over the years, he achieved a black belt 1st dan (shodan) and eventually reached an impressive 8th Dan. Gursharan has participated in numerous national and international kata and kumite events, but it was his visit to Japan in 1984 that truly shaped his karate journey.
Training in a Japanese dojo under Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa was a turning point for Gursharan, inspiring him to fully dedicate himself to training and teaching karate as a way of life.
In 1981, Gursharan opened his first karate club in Luton/Dunstable, which eventually became TISKA's headquarters. In 1993, he founded TISKA, which has since grown to become one of the largest karate associations in the UK. With a passion for karate that has never waned, Gursharan still teaches over 35 classes a week in the UK and conducts master classes internationally. He has successfully mentored hundreds of students of all ages, guiding them to black belt standard and beyond.
Beyond his commitment to karate, Gursharan is also actively involved in charity work. He helps subsidise trips for surgeons to third-world countries to operate on underprivileged children and has funded various projects in India. Currently, he is supporting the construction of a new school. Gursharan resides in Buckinghamshire, happily married with a son and daughter who are already showing potential in following their father's footsteps.
