The history of Thorncliffe Bowling Club dates back to the end of the Second World War. Following the war, many returning soldiers who worked at Newton Chambers saw positive changes in society. The company, which encompassed various engineering, chemical, and paper-related facilities, decided to create a sports area for its workforce. In 1949, football pitches, tennis courts, a running track, a long jump, a netball court, a cricket field, and two bowling greens were established.
In the early years, women were not allowed to play at the club but instead played supportive roles such as making tea. However, in approximately 1990, Thorncliffe Bowling Club became one of the first clubs to grant women membership. The women quickly formed their own Ladies section, complete with leagues and matches, contributing to the club's vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
Thorncliffe Bowling Club has become a place for members to forge lasting friendships and enjoy matches, fun days, and presentation evenings. The club is immensely grateful to the individuals at Newton Chambers who had the vision to create such a wonderful facility. It is their hope that future generations will continue to relish and appreciate the outstanding sports facilities available at Thorncliffe Bowling Club.
