Under the guidance of Malcolm Saunders, The Welsh Aikido Society (WAS) sprang to life in 1988. Based in Tonypandy, South Wales, the WAS has grown swiftly despite an already active Aikido scene.
WAS focuses on developing mind-body coordination, with an emphasis on Ki development. The Aikido style here is all about harmony and relaxation. You learn basic techniques—both hand-to-hand and with weapons—within a traditional framework. The instructors make sure your self-defence skills are sharp while keeping you relaxed and coordinated.
Classes are open for all ages and skill levels. WAS instructors have coaching certificates from the British Aikido Board and are insured to teach. They focus on the coordination of mind and body, enhancing posture and relaxation whether you’re standing still or moving. You’ll do partner exercises that include traditional hand-to-hand and weapon techniques.
Want to join? Just fill out the membership form. Clubs are located in Tonypandy and Cardiff. In Tonypandy, classes take place at Alec Jones Scout & Community Hall with kids’ sessions from 19:15-20:15 and adults from 20:15-21:15 on Wednesdays.
Prices are straightforward: adult classes are £4 per lesson, and annual membership is £25 with free annual insurance. Gradings cost £10, and you can buy Aikido suits, weapons, and hoodies on request. Reduced rates are available for students and children.
Sensei Malcolm Saunders has been on the Aikido path since the 1960s, starting in Rhondda and learning from Dan grade Hywel Jenkins. After summer training with Sensei Williams, Saunders helped establish WAS. The guidance of Sensei Williams and Master Koichi Tohei shaped the unique approach and teaching style of the society.
WAS offers a friendly, inclusive environment perfect for anyone seeking self-defence, fitness, and confidence. With top-notch instructors and a solid focus on mind-body coordination, you’re in good hands whether you’re just starting out or have been practising Aikido for years.
