Formerly a colliery site, The Summit Colliery mine once employed over 1,300 men, making it one of the largest mines in the country. The construction of houses for the miners on Lowmoor Road and the establishment of East Kirkby Miners Welfare followed. However, the colliery was closed in 1969. Subsequently, the East Kirkby Miners Welfare became the owner of the land, and the Summit Centre was built through the efforts of the Coal Industry Social Welfare organisation (CISWO), which is a national charity.
Phase one of the centre was officially opened in 2000, with phase two completed in 2002. CISWO focuses on the development of community welfare.
