Three rides of varying abilities are available, with the Blacks riding at a tempo pace for distances of 80 km and above, the Reds riding at a slightly more forgiving pace, usually with a café stop included, and the Yellows offering a great starting point for those new to club riding.
Saturday Tempo rides provide the opportunity for members to link up with experienced riders to train and get stronger. Alternatively, riders can join others of similar ability for scenic rides on Saturdays. Members stay connected through a WhatsApp group, making it easy to arrange rides and share information.
For those seeking a challenge, the Thursday Chaingang rides are the perfect option. Held from April to August, these training rides take place in the evenings and involve riders forming a line and rotating off the front. The pace increases throughout the ride, providing an exhilarating experience. The rides loop the Vipers, allowing riders to continue even if they get dropped, and giving them the chance to try again the following week.
” The Race of Truth,” known as the Wednesday Time Trials, is a 10-mile mid-week time trial that takes place from April to September. The Shaftesbury Vipers 10 is a popular and fun event held around the iconic Vipers loop. Riders compete against the clock, setting off at one-minute intervals. League tables are compiled for men, women, handicap, junior, and veterans categories, creating a season-long competition.
However, riders are also welcome to participate sporadically and challenge themselves individually.
During the winter months when outdoor cycling may not be feasible, members can enjoy Indoor Zwifting. The club organises “auto stay together” group rides on the virtual platform Zwift, providing inspiration and motivation for indoor training.
