Welcome to The Rugby Club of Victoria, the home for lovers of Rugby Union in Victoria. In the birthplace of Aussie Rules, we understand that fans of the game they play in heaven can feel outnumbered. That's why we founded this club, to provide a place where rugby players, supporters, and fans can come together and share their love for the game.
Unlike other organisations such as the Melbourne Rebels, Rugby Victoria, and Rugby Australia, we operate independently. However, we actively collaborate with these organisations and local rugby clubs to facilitate the growth and enjoyment of rugby in our state. Our aim is to see rugby flourish in Victoria and create a strong community of rugby enthusiasts.
At The Rugby Club of Victoria, we believe in supporting initiatives that help grow rugby in our state. We raise funds and allocate them to the best ideas for promoting the sport. Every club member has the opportunity to vote on which initiative to support, ensuring that everyone plays an active role in the growth of the game.
If you have an idea that requires financial or resource support, whether it's funding, people, skills, or connexions, we encourage you to contact us and discuss the application process. We are actively seeking ideas, no matter how big or small, that have the potential to benefit rugby in Victoria. However, preference is given to ideas with statewide potential, rather than those that solely benefit one club or school.
Throughout our history, we have proudly supported several fantastic initiatives to grow rugby in Victoria. For example, we helped fund the establishment of the Academy Movement's rugby academy at Melton Secondary College, providing opportunities for young players to develop their skills. We also assisted in the re-establishment of Maroondah Rugby Club's juniors programme, promoting grassroots rugby and fostering the next generation of players.
To further promote the love of rugby, The Rugby Club of Victoria produces a captivating podcast series called “The Spirit in Rugby Union. ” In this series, you'll hear inspiring stories from famous and not-so-famous individuals from all over the world. They discuss how rugby and its distinct values have shaped their lives and achievements. Our goal is to raise awareness and appreciation for the game, reaching new audiences and connecting with the global rugby community.
We are honoured to have Gordon Bray AM, fondly known as “The Voice of Rugby,” as our Patron. Gordon's name is synonymous with international rugby broadcasting, having called over 450 test matches and all nine Rugby World Cups. As a sports journalist of over 40 years standing and a best-selling author, his contributions to the rugby world are unmatched. In 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his services to rugby through refereeing and television broadcasting.
In 2005, he received further recognition for his community services and promotion of rugby by being made a Member of the Order of Australia.
We hold regular meetings at Bells Hotel, located at 157 Moray Street, South Melbourne. It is the perfect venue to gather with fellow rugby enthusiasts and enjoy the thrill of a broadcast game.
Join The Rugby Club of Victoria today and become part of a vibrant community that thrives on the spirit of rugby. Let's grow the game together and ensure that rugby continues to make its mark in Victoria.
