About

Welcome to The Newport Karate Centre, a traditional Shotokan Karate-Do club located in Newport, South Wales. The club, also known as TheNKC, was founded by Sensei's David Lloyd and Kerry Straeker with the aim of promoting traditional Shotokan Karate-Do training in the area.

The Newport Karate Centre offers training for everyone, from 8 to 70+ years old. They have separate classes for junior students (8-15 years) and mixed classes for students aged 16 and above. The club prides itself on providing high-quality training at affordable prices, ensuring that the quality of training is not compromised.

The training at The Newport Karate Centre focuses on the three core principles of Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring). They also emphasise the practical application of karate in modern day life, known as “Bunkai. ” The club follows a balanced and safe approach to training, ensuring that students learn the art of Shotokan Karate-Do in a structured and effective manner.

TheNKC has a fully-equipped, friendly, and professionally run dojo where members can practise and master their karate skills. In 2020, the club made the decision to move to their own dojo, giving them the flexibility to open and close as needed. This move also allowed them to have all their equipment permanently available for their members to use.

The Newport Karate Centre is affiliated with the Welsh Traditional Karate Federation (WTKF) and registered with the Japan Karate Association World Federation (JKAWF), under the guidance of Sensei Masao Kawasoe, an 8th Dan JKAWF instructor and examiner. The club is also a member of the Welsh Karate Governing Body (WKGB) and is authorised to carry out gradings from 10th Kyu up to and including 1st Kyu. They have an excellent record of successful Kyu and 1st Dan passes.

To ensure the safety and welfare of its members, TheNKC holds a full club insurance policy covering all instructors, visiting instructors, and students. All instructors have been DBS checked, completed NSPCC courses in Child Safety & Welfare, and have been trained and graded by sanctioned JKAWF examiners. The club is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all its members.
