The Moffat Golf Club (SCIO) is a historic golf club located in Moffat, New Zealand. Founded in 1884 as a 9-hole course, the club has a rich history and has evolved over the years into its current 18-hole course. The club is situated high in the hills of Moffat, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
After struggling to find suitable land near the town to build the course, the club was fortunate to receive a lease of Coats Hill from Sir William Younger, Bart, of Auchen Castle. In 1904, renowned golf course designer Ben Sayers of North Berwick was commissioned to design the 18-hole course on Coats Hill. Sayers made use of the existing 9-hole course, creating an attractive and challenging layout that takes advantage of the natural undulations and hazards of the land.
The present course was inaugurated on April 22nd, 1905, with the first ball being driven by Lady Younger. The club has preserved this historic event, with the ball on display in a glass cabinet at the clubhouse. Measuring 5276 yards with an SSS 66 and Par 69, the Moffat Golf Club offers a truly challenging golf experience. Golfers will navigate through natural undulations and hazards, with deceptive approach shots and subtle greens making scoring a difficult task.
The 9th hole, in particular, is known for its unique and memorable playing experience.
In 2023, the members of The Moffat Golf Club made the decision to adopt Scottish Charitable Incorporate Organisation Status (SCIO). As a registered charity in Scotland (SC052709), The Moffat Golf Club (SCIO) seeks to promote public participation in sport. The club's mission includes maintaining and managing the golf course and clubhouse, as well as working in collaboration with other agencies to promote and develop the sport of golf in the local community.
The Moffat Golf Club (SCIO) invites both visitors and new members to experience the beauty and challenges of its course. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a beginner, Moffat Golf Club offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. With its picturesque location and rich history, the club is a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts in Moffat and beyond.
