The school is dedicated to providing a fun and social atmosphere for individuals of all ages and skill levels. With a focus on socialising and having fun while exercising, The Harp Irish Set Dancers aims to provide a first-rate experience for all its students.
Irish Set Dancing is a social form of Irish dancing that involves two to four couples. It is suitable for experts, beginners, adults, and kids, and the teachers will always walk through any dance to ensure everyone understands. The school prides itself on creating a welcoming environment where laughter and enjoyment are encouraged. It is also worth mentioning that Irish heritage is not a requirement to join the classes, and individuals are welcome to participate even without a partner as there are always partners available.
The origins of Irish Set Dancing can be traced back to soldiers returning from wars in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. These soldiers brought back dances that were mainly danced by the aristocracy, many of them French in origin. The Irish enthusiastically embraced these dances and put their own unique stamp on them, dancing to reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, and slides with great rhythm and passion.
Classes are held on Monday nights at the Sutherland Bowling Club – Club Kirrawee and on Wednesday nights at the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills. New dancers are welcomed at any time, and the emphasis is on dancing for enjoyment. The school encourages individuals to give it a try by coming along any night and experiencing the art of dance. Many class participants also meet regularly at local sessions, pubs, ceili nights, events, and festivals both at home and abroad, further enhancing the sense of community and enjoyment.
The Harp Irish Set Dancers is proud to have experienced teachers who explain and teach the dances. Trish McGrath, a highly regarded teacher and choreographer with over 40 years of experience in Irish Dancing, is one of the dedicated teachers. Alarna Doherty, with 30 years of dancing experience, has developed a teaching style that combines a passionate love for Irish dance with the belief that dancing should always be fun.
The Harp Irish Set Dancers was handed Michael John Hand's class in 1998, and since then, Trish and Alarna have taken the school to new heights. Their lively steps, humour, and enthusiasm for Irish dancing have attracted a large following. Their ceilis, which they have been running every two months since 1998, have become the most popular events on the Irish calendar, with dancers regularly travelling from Canberra, Newcastle, Central Coast, and Victoria to attend.
Whether you have always wanted to try Irish dancing or simply want to join a fun and social dance community, The Harp Irish Set Dancers is the place to be. With experienced teachers, a welcoming environment, and a focus on enjoyment, this dance school is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.
