The Finchley Ballet School, located in Finchley Central, is one of London's oldest established dance schools, serving the North London community for over 50 years. With a strong emphasis on Ballet, Jazz, and Tap, the school offers classes for children starting from 18 months old all the way up to young adults. Whether students are looking to pursue dance as a career or simply enjoy the fun and expression that comes with dancing, The Finchley Ballet School aims to provide a caring, friendly, and fun atmosphere.
The school prides itself on the quality of its teaching and its highly trained teachers. All instructors are accredited from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), and they teach their respective syllabi. With classes suited to all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced, The Finchley Ballet School offers every student the opportunity to work towards their full potential and dance aspirations.
For pre-school children aged 3 and above, the school offers a range of classes to develop coordination, strength, good posture, and an elegant poise. Alongside the physical benefits, dance also allows children to express themselves through music and movement. As students progress through the school, those who show exceptional talent, commitment, and a passion for dance have the opportunity to pursue dancing at a high level or career. The school's training provides an excellent foundation, as demonstrated by past students who have received dance scholarships to secondary schools and secured places at prestigious vocational dance schools such as the Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet, and Elmhurst Ballet School.
The history of The Finchley Ballet School dates back to 1959, when it was founded by Janice Brass with just three children in a class. As Brass's reputation as an exceptional teacher spread throughout the local community, the school grew rapidly. To accommodate the increasing number of students, the school relocated to the newly built 'St Mary at Finchley Parish Hall'. This venue remains one of the school's teaching locations to this day.
In 1992, Helen Melissinou, who had been teaching at the school for several years, took over as Principal and continued to build on the school's legacy.
Under the direction of Helen Melissinou, The Finchley Ballet School has expanded and now operates from three premises. The school works closely with the Royal Academy of Dance, utilising their internationally recognised syllabus and high exam standards. In addition to Ballet, the school also offers instruction in Jazz and Tap. Students have the opportunity to participate in summer workshops and occasionally perform in large-scale dance productions, showcasing their skills.
With a rich history and a commitment to providing excellent dance education, The Finchley Ballet School continues to inspire and nurture young dancers in the North London community.
