To ensure the reliability of their karate school, the Budo ka Red Dragon Shotokan Karate Club is affiliated with the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB). Students who are members of the KUGB and fulfil all the technical requirements, hold a current KUGB licence and record book, and have permission from their senior club instructor, are eligible to grade. The grading may be taken at the student's own dojo, other dojo's, or at special courses. Additionally, students must train on average twice per week at a KUGB dojo with an approved KUGB instructor.

During the grading, the student must present their record book and licence for the examiner's inspection and signature. Novices are eligible to grade after two months of training, and there must be a minimum of three monthly intervals between each grading from 9th Kyu to 1st Kyu. Exceptional students may be directly graded to 8th Kyu at the discretion of the examiner.

The club also offers monthly karate courses for both juniors and adults. The cost for these courses is 40 per month. Additionally, there is a grading examination fee of 38.
