Tetsushinkan Aikido Dojo is a well-established sports school and martial arts studio located in the heart of Islington, London. Led by Paul Smith, an experienced instructor with over 30 years of training and teaching, Tetsushinkan offers a unique approach to Aikido, integrating sword techniques from Kashima No Tachi.
At Tetsushinkan Dojo, the focus is on Budo, the Martial Way, emphasising the development of mind, body, and spirit. By combining Aikido and Kenjutsu, the art of swordsmanship, students at the dojo benefit from a comprehensive and holistic training experience. This integration of two distinct arts creates a sophisticated methodology, in which sword and empty-handed techniques are seamlessly woven together, forming an inseparable whole.
Paul Smith's expertise stems from his extensive study with Inaba Sensei, the previous Head of The Shiseikan Budojo at Meiji Jingu in Tokyo. Inaba Sensei's teachings have deeply influenced Paul, and he continues to explore and evolve his understanding of the relationship between Ken and Aikido. This exploration is reflected in his distinct approach to teaching Budo, ensuring a comprehensive and authentic learning experience for students.
Aikido, as taught at Tetsushinkan Dojo, is a non-competitive martial art that relies on the use of techniques combined with energy (“ki”) to control and redirect an opponent's force. Developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the 1930s, Aikido draws on knowledge from various traditional martial arts, notably Daito Ryu Jujutsu. The practise includes defence against a wide range of strikes, punches, holds, and even attacks with weapons. Aikido is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, offering a fluid and dynamic movement style.
Tetsushinkan Dojo welcomes both men and women who are eager to explore the profound teachings of Aikido and develop their physical and mental abilities. Whether you are a beginner or have prior experience in martial arts, the dojo provides a supportive and inclusive training environment. The teaching style at Tetsushinkan is heavily influenced by Inaba Sensei's instruction at The Shiseikan Dojo in Meiji Jingu, Tokyo, ensuring a rigorous and authentic learning experience.
The dojo is located at New Unity Hall, 277A Upper St, London N1 2TZ. For inquiries or to sign up for classes, individuals can reach out via email at tetsushinkanaikido@gmail.
