Teddington Hockey Club (London) is the oldest hockey club in the world, with a rich history spanning over 150 years. The club was founded in 1871 by members of the Teddington cricket club who were looking for a winter activity. They developed a game based on the rules of association football, but with their own unique modifications.
The club initially played with old cricket balls and limited the number per side to eleven players. They also introduced the concept of the striking circle, known as “The D. ” These innovations became defining features of modern hockey. Interclub matches were played between Teddington and clubs in Richmond and Surbiton, although there were occasional disagreements on the rules.
In 1886, the Hockey Association was formed during a dinner at the Holborn Restaurant in London. Teddington was among the clubs in attendance, along with Surbiton, Wimbledon, Trinity College Cambridge, Molesey, and Ealing. Since then, Teddington has remained a crucial part of British hockey. It was one of the founding members of the London League in 1969 and later joined the National League premier Division when it was established in 1988.
Teddington Men's team has achieved significant success, becoming National premier League Champions in 1995 and winning the England Hockey Cup in 1994 and 1996. They have also had a strong presence in international and Olympic competitions, with several players representing Great Britain, including Olympians Jason Laslett, Calum Giles, Ali Wilson, and Matt Daly.
The Ladies' teams at Teddington were established over ten years ago and have quickly become successful. They celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2016. Additionally, Teddington boasts one of the largest junior sections in the country, with over 500 young players participating in teams ranging from U6 to U18. The club's dedication to developing young talent was recognised when it was voted as the best junior club in the Home Counties.
Teddington Hockey Club offers excellent facilities for its members. The clubhouse, located on Broom Road in Teddington, features amenities such as toilets, a bar, a kit shop, a serviced kitchen, and free parking. The Teddington School Pitches, also situated on Broom Road, provide additional facilities, including toilets and changing rooms, as well as two pitches for matches and training sessions.
