Tanwood Dance School, based in Swindon, is a highly esteemed performing arts school renowned for its comprehensive training in all aspects of the profession. Established in 1944 by Mollie Tanner, affectionately known as Miss Mollie, the school is now under the expert direction of her daughter Pollyann, a talented choreographer and director.
Tanwood offers a wide range of training opportunities to pupils of all ages, starting from as young as 2 years old and extending up to 75 years old. Whether individuals are pursuing a career in the performing arts or simply seeking leisure activities, Tanwood caters to all levels and aspirations.
With its own dedicated premises and a team of 14 experienced staff members, Tanwood operates seven days a week, providing evening classes and a full-time course. The school prides itself on its remarkable track record, with current and former students achieving great success in various fields. Many have gone on to perform in the West End, national tours, the Royal Ballet Company, worldwide ballet companies, television and commercials, leading roles in feature films, and even news presenting. Some notable alumni have even hosted their own television shows, while others have established their own dance schools or pursued careers as directors and choreographers.
Tanwood's reputation for excellence is further reinforced by the achievements of its students. Notably, eight pupils have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the cast of Billy Elliot, while the school provided the orphans for the National Tour of Annie with Sue Pollard. Tanwood students have also been recognised as all England finals winners, Grandison Clark award winners, and Janet Cram award winners. Additionally, the school boasts an impressive 100% pass rate in all ISTD, IDTA, and RAD exams.
The school takes immense pride in several students becoming associates of the Royal Ballet, with 11 even securing placements at the prestigious Royal Ballet School. Numerous others have received scholarships to renowned institutions such as Elmhurst, Tring, Arts Ed, Birds, and Laines. Tanwood pupils have been privileged to perform for distinguished guests, including Princess Margaret at Drury Lane Theatre and Her Majesty the Queen at the Royal Festival Hall for her 60th birthday celebrations. Moreover, Princess Anne graced Tanwood's annual extravaganza at the Wyvern Theatre Swindon in 1982, while the iconic London Palladium hosted Tanwood's 70th-anniversary celebrations.
For over 50 years, Tanwood has been providing talented dancers for professional pantomimes and is continuously sought after for concerts and cabaret performances. The school is deeply honoured to have had Moira Shearer as its former patron, and after her passing in 2006, the legendary Bonnie Langford graciously stepped in to fulfil this role.
In 2014, Tanwood celebrated its 70th anniversary in grand style, with a performance at the iconic London Palladium and a fabulous summer ball. The school also presented an epic show, “Tanwoods Greatest Hits,” which showcased original award-winning pieces and welcomed back many former students from across the globe. Looking toward the future, Tanwood eagerly anticipates its 80th celebration in 2024.
As a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence, Tanwood produced the first-ever performance of “CATS – THE MUSICAL” in its local area in 2016. This significant achievement kick-started the annual Tanwood Youth Theatre productions, which have since become a highly anticipated event. Notable productions on the horizon include “Footloose” in 2017, “42nd Street” in 2018, and “Matilda. ” Stay tuned for another spectacular production, “Frozen,” in 2024.
