The Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club, located on the North Shore of Auckland, is a prominent club in New Zealand's largest city. Originally starting as both an outrigger (Waka Ama) and a dragon boating club, it has now become one of the strongest Waka Ama clubs in the country.
The club is fortunate to have access to two exceptional paddling venues, Lake Pupuke and Takapuna Beach. Both locations, just minutes from downtown Auckland, offer a variety of conditions suitable for paddlers of all levels of experience and confidence.
Waka Ama has experienced significant growth nationwide in recent years, with the National Sprint Championships and the Secondary Schools Nationals becoming some of the largest sporting events in New Zealand in terms of team participation. The Taniwha club has played a part in this growth, and in 2007, one of their teams, the Grizzlies, established the renowned Takapuna Beach Cup. This 42 km long-distance race has become a highly-regarded international event, attracting teams from around the world and showcasing a fleet of over 95 waka.
The Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club fully supports and embraces the goals and values of Nga Kaiohe O Aotearoa (NKOA), the national Waka Ama body. In particular, the club is committed to embodying the concepts of Manaakitanga (reciprocity and inclusion), Whaunaugatanga (belonging and collective strength), Hauroa (well-being), and T Tangata (accountability, respect, integrity, and passion). These principles are incorporated into the club's strategic vision, which involves focusing on recruitment and retention of members, providing coaching and high-quality equipment, nurturing a strong club culture based on relationships, maintaining clear and effective communication, and striving for excellence in achievement and recognition.
The Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club is always open to new members and encourages paddlers of all levels to join their welcoming and supportive community. Whether an experienced Waka Ama enthusiast or a beginner looking to get involved in the sport, the club offers comprehensive training programmes and opportunities for growth.
