Studied at the Yon Hap School and became close friends with a Korean/Japanese ethnic by the name of Mr. Kim who was highly skilled in Karate. Kim taught Choi the rudiments of this martial art.
In 1942, he followed his father's desire and went to Japan for further studies. After nine months, the great General learned karate techniques from Mr. Yosihara, who at that time, was teaching Karate. Due to his tremendous dedication and perseverance, he finished secondary and college education at the same time on February 1, 1945.
Despite the political repression at the time, Gen Choi researched the various martial arts then taught in Korea and founded the Oh Do Kwan school in Seoul on October 11th, 1954.
Shortly after its founding, he travelled to Seoul Customs House to obtain official recognition of the school's registration. At that meeting on April 11th, 1955, he symbolically changed the name of the school to Taekwon-Do. The name was unanimously adopted as the name of the art. The development of Taekwon-Do was rapid from that point on.
