Sydney Aikikai Incorporated is a friendly Aikido Club located on Sydney's Northern Beaches. As a Covid Safe Business, they prioritise the safety and well-being of all their members. The club warmly welcomes new members and encourages them to join their community. Beginners are introduced to Aikido at a comfortable pace, with instructors and senior practitioners providing guidance and support in mastering the basics.
Classes typically begin with a 15-minute warm-up session, followed by Ukemi (rolling and falling) practise and fundamental foot/body movements known as “Tai sabake. ” From there, participants progress to learning general techniques.
Aikido training at Sydney Aikikai is designed to be enjoyable and inclusive. The club embraces members of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and physical capabilities. Instead of focusing on competition or exhibiting superior strength, the emphasis lies in supporting and working together as a team. Through this non-competitive environment, students can train vigorously while remaining mindful of their training partners.
This awareness of each other's capabilities is considered essential in Aikido. As practitioners progress, they find that their sincere training transcends the ego and positively influences their daily lives.
The self-paced training at Sydney Aikikai accommodates individual capabilities while ensuring a challenging experience. Unlike gym workouts that often focus on linear movements, Aikido techniques involve complex and compound series of movements. Through consistent practise, Aikido practitioners gain flexibility and toughness, rather than solely focusing on building strength.
Sydney Aikikai operates as a not-for-profit and independent Aikikai dojo. They offer classes in two locations: Manly and Collaroy. Classes are open to all individuals, although they do not currently have classes specifically for children. General training sessions are held at Manly on Sundays from 9 am to 11 am and at Collaroy on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Any changes to the training timetable, such as during the summer break, can be found in the designated category on their website.
To get in touch with Sydney Aikikai for any inquiries, interested individuals can contact Tiong Chandra via mobile telephone at 0413 302182. Prior to joining, prospective members are encouraged to visit the dojo and observe a class to gain a better understanding of the club and its ethos. Additionally, all new members must sign a waiver form, which is a requirement for the club's insurance policy. They are allowed their first two classes within a two-week period at no charge, provided the waiver is correctly filled in and witnessed by a senior member.
Waiver forms can be found online or in the dojos, and new members are also required to complete a membership application form.
Membership fees at Sydney Aikikai cover up to two classes per week at both the Manly and Collaroy locations. As a nonprofit organisation, the fees contribute to the club's operations and development. For detailed information on fees, new members must contact Jon Denly, the club treasurer, via email at treasurer@aikidoaustralia. com.
au. Jon will provide guidance on fees, confirm the completion of the waiver, and discuss any additional requirements.
By choosing to practise Aikido at Sydney Aikikai Incorporated, members become part of a welcoming and supportive community that values growth, camaraderie, and self-improvement.
