Swing Tyne, under the guidance of its volunteer team, is dedicated to promoting Swing Dancing in Newcastle Upon Tyne and the North East. As a non-profit entity, all earnings support venue hire and necessary overheads.
Every Monday evening, Swing Tyne hosts weekly classes open to all levels at Summerhill Pavilion & Gardens, Winchester Terrace, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 6EH. Starting at 19:30, the 40-minute Improvers Class caters to those familiar with basic steps, followed by a Fundamentals Class from 20:20-21:00 for beginners or those seeking to refine the basics.
Additionally, every other Monday, Swing Tyne offers Collegiate Shag and Balboa classes at St Matthews Church, 11 Summerhill Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 6EJ, following the same schedule of Improvers and Fundamentals.
Post-class, participants are invited to partake in social dancing from 21:00-22:30 at Summerhill Pavilion & Gardens, providing a relaxed environment to practise and mingle. A monthly social dancing event also takes place at Revolucion de Cuba on the second Thursday of every month.
Classes are priced at £4 each, with two classes available for £7, inclusive of social dancing. Social dance participation alone is £4, with the first-time attendee’s social dance offered free. Student discounts are available.
Swing Tyne's venues are conveniently within a 2-minute walk of each other. For updates, individuals can join the Swing Tyne Facebook Group and follow their Facebook Page.
The organisation frequently hosts workshops and events, including the upcoming Balboa Workshop on 10-11 February 2024 featuring Mel & Jo Calanglang from London. In December, they held a Lindy Hop Winter Workshop with Jeff Tong & Marco Mazza, capped off with an evening social featuring the Tenement Jazz Band.
Swing Tyne offers a welcoming space for all skill levels to connect, learn, and enjoy Swing Dancing, fostering a vibrant and inclusive dance community.
