Swimming at Marrinawi Cove is the newest and most beautiful swimming spot in Sydney. Located at the northern end of Barangaroo Reserve, it is a 700 square metre sheltered cove surrounded by native flora and sculpted sandstone. The swimming enclosure was opened by the NSW Government in January 2023 to revive swimming in Sydney's famous harbour waters.
The swimming enclosure at Marrinawi Cove is designed with safety in mind. It has safety netting to enclose the swimming area, railing, signage, and a shower. However, it is important to note that this is a natural environment with slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as oysters, algae, and other marine life present. Swimmers are encouraged to take care at all times, follow safety signage, and use suitable footwear.
Near the Cove at the Towns Place entrance, there is the Former Sewerage Pump House, a small brown building that provides toilet facilities and showers for swimmers.
Water quality at Marrinawi Cove is monitored regularly to ensure a safe swimming experience for the community. The NSW Government conducts periodic water quality testing, and ongoing monitoring will continue to be in place. The government is also investigating appropriate systems for long-term water quality monitoring in the future.
Marrinawi Cove will not be staffed by swimming lifeguards or equivalent monitoring personnel. Swimmers in this area will swim at their own risk. However, the wider area will be monitored as an extension of the existing monitoring systems at Barangaroo, and the Rangers team will provide management and response in the event of an incident.
To ensure the safety of swimmers against sharks and predators, a shark net is in place at Marrinawi Cove. The net is anchored to the floor of the Cove and fully encloses the swimming area.
To manage oyster growth and other marine life, the Cove will be periodically cleaned. The cleaning schedule includes specific dates when Marrinawi Cove will be closed for cleaning. These dates have a contingency of the day before and the day after, weather permitting.
While dogs are allowed to swim at Marrinawi Cove, it is important to remember that when walking in Barangaroo, dogs must be on a leash at all times. Fishing, however, is prohibited at Barangaroo.
Swimming at Marrinawi Cove provides a unique and refreshing swimming experience in the heart of Sydney. Coupled with the picturesque surroundings and the efforts taken to ensure safety, it is a must-visit location for any swimming enthusiast.
