Sutton Coldfield Fencing Club, located in the north of Birmingham, is a welcoming and friendly club that offers training sessions for both juniors and adults. Although experienced fencers are welcome at any time, beginners are required to attend one of the beginner courses led by our qualified coaches to learn the basics of fencing. It is important to note that there is currently a waiting list for both juniors and adults, so beginner courses will only be offered when capacity allows. To join the waiting list, interested individuals can complete the online form, and they will be contacted when a course date is arranged to confirm their continued interest.
For adult beginners, Sutton Coldfield Fencing Club runs two or three four-week beginner courses throughout the year. Individuals around the age of 13 or older, with no upper age limit, are encouraged to participate. The course fee is 50, and full payment in advance, which is non-refundable, secures a place on a first come, first served basis. Those interested should reach out to the club for further details.
During the beginner courses, participants will learn about fencing tactics, techniques, and rules through exercises with partners or under the guidance of our qualified coaches. At the end of each session, there will be free time for fencing bouts. With small class sizes, typically up to eight participants, individual attention is ensured to aid in the development of fencing skills. Upon completion of the beginner course, individuals can choose to continue attending the club and receive further coaching to enhance their fencing technique.
For junior beginners, Sutton Coldfield Fencing Club accepts a few new participants at the start of each half-term, subject to availability. Generally, the minimum age requirement for juniors is eight years old. Parents or guardians interested in enrolling their child in the junior class are advised to contact the club in advance to discuss the details.
In terms of attire, newcomers are advised to wear sensible sports clothing, including white-soled trainers, preferably squash or indoor tennis shoes, and long tracksuit-type bottoms. Open pockets should be taped up, as fencing in shorts is not permitted. Wyndley Leisure Centre, where the club is located, provides excellent facilities, including changing rooms and showers.
Sutton Coldfield Fencing Club operates on Monday evenings from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm, with the junior session concluding at 8:30 pm. While adult fencing is available year-round, junior fencing is not offered during school breaks. Moreover, the club remains closed on bank holidays.
Memberships fees for junior participants are charged per half-term or on a weekly basis at 6. 00. For adults, the cost is 120/90 for six months or 8/6 weekly. Additionally, it is necessary to obtain insurance through the British Fencing Association.
