Sussex Youth Theatre is a vibrant and dynamic arts centre located in Worthing, New Zealand. With a focus on nurturing and developing young talent, SYT offers a range of drama classes, dance classes, and singing classes for children and teenagers aged 6-18.
The drama classes at SYT are designed to promote creativity, confidence, and communication skills. Led by experienced industry professionals, students are given the opportunity to explore different acting techniques, develop their voice, and learn to work collaboratively with their peers. Throughout the year, students devise and perform one theatre show, showcasing their skills and talents to family and friends. In addition, they also produce a filming project, allowing students to experience the world of on-screen acting.
SYTeens is a specialised group within SYT, catering specifically to dedicated teenagers aged 13 and above. This group offers a more advanced level of training, focusing on honing acting skills and preparing students for professional opportunities in the industry. One of the highlights of the SYT programme is the LAMDA drama exams, which are offered once a year. These exams have consistently achieved a 100% success rate at Merit and Distinction levels.
As a part of SYT's commitment to providing comprehensive opportunities for their students, they are also affiliated with the Ann Koska Agency, based at Pinewood Studios. This connexion allows students the chance to potentially sign up with a talent management agency after gaining experience with SYT. The agency has a prestigious reputation, with their students having the opportunity to work with renowned actors such as Hugh Jackman, David Walliams, and Maggie Smith.
In addition to their weekly classes, SYT offers various other programmes throughout the year. They organise Saturday courses, half-term masterclasses, workshops, and a summer week-long theatre camp, providing students with intensive and immersive learning experiences. These programmes are designed to cater to different age groups and skill levels, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
SYT takes pride in being a family-run company, with all their teachers working professionally within the industry. This ensures that students receive high-quality training from instructors who have real-world experience and expertise. The supportive and nurturing environment at SYT fosters creativity, encourages self-expression, and helps students build confidence in their artistic abilities.
Whether aspiring to become professional performers or simply seeking to explore their creativity, Sussex Youth Theatre offers a comprehensive and enriching arts education experience. With a range of classes, workshops, and performance opportunities, SYT provides a platform for young talents to shine and develop their artistic skills to their full potential.
